Act with justice, love with kindness, and walk humbly with your God. – Micah 6:8
We foster a culture that promotes unity and reconciliation. We strive to care wisely
for our people, our resources and our earth. We stand in solidarity with the most vulnerable,
working to remove the causes of oppression and promoting justice for all.

Providence Alaska Foundation supports organizations like New Life Development that carry the mission of
Providence into the community, providing care and promoting justice for the poor and vulnerable in Alaska.

Coming off five years in prison, and six weeks in a coma from a heroin overdose before that, Laura knew that true second chances were a rare thing. She also knew that there might not be another chance after, and she would need help to put her life back together. She turned to New Life Development (NLD), a Providence community partner organization.

“I need a change, a place with stability and a program to live that has accountability and structure built in.” She wrote in her application to NLD. “I cannot do this on my own.”

Laura spent most of her life trying to make it on her own. Left to fend for herself since the age of twelve, she grew up in a world of crime and drugs and desperation. Addiction controlled Laura’s life, and tore apart her family. She was forced to give up parental rights to her children, who were already suffering from the same addictions Laura struggled with. She was alone and isolated and caught in a cycle of self-destruction that she couldn’t escape.

NLD’s residential re-entry program is designed for men and women like Laura, returning from incarceration or substance abuse treatment, looking for a way back to themselves and to a real life beyond addiction. NLD provided Laura with housing, meals, counseling, and the support she needed to build a new life.

“When I came to NLD I instantly felt safe and not judged. I knew this was the place where I needed to be. I got a job right away. I was officially on my journey to recovery.” Laura wrote on coming to NLD.

Over a year after coming to NLD, Laura is still sober. She works full time, helps counsel others at NLD, and has reconnected with her children and two grandchildren.

“This place has changed my thought process which has saved my life. Now I thrive to help others break the chains of addiction and live life without the guilt and shame. I try to be an example to my children, showing them that there is a better life. It has not been easy but having the support I have here has made me a better person.”

The problems of addiction, homelessness, and behavioral health reach deep into our community. There are so many stories that begin just like Laura’s, with fear and desperation and hopelessness. But through programs and services like New Life Development’s residential re-entry, that treated Laura with compassion and provided her the steady support she needed to build her new life on, we can overcome these problems. We can ensure that those stories that began like Laura’s end like hers as well, with recovery and hope.
